Mode Profile

Relative to the other transport modes

  • Speed
  • Cost efficiency
  • Capacity
  • Eco-friendliness
  • Flexibility

Advantages

  • Massive CapacityOcean vessels can transport enormous volumes of cargo in a single journey, making them ideal for bulk shipments and large quantities.
  • Cost EfficiencyThe most economical option for long-distance international freight, offering significant savings per ton-mile compared to other transport modes.
  • Lower Carbon FootprintDespite large volumes, maritime transport has a relatively low carbon footprint per ton of cargo transported compared to air freight.
  • Global ConnectivityAccess to virtually all coastal regions worldwide through an extensive network of shipping routes and port facilities.
  • Ideal for Heavy/Bulk CargoPerfect for transporting raw materials, commodities, and oversized cargo that would be impractical via other modes.

Disadvantages

  • Transit TimeSignificantly longer transit times compared to air freight, requiring advance planning for inventory management.
  • Weather DependencySusceptibility to delays from adverse weather conditions, seasonal factors, and ocean current patterns.
  • Port CongestionPotential bottlenecks at busy ports leading to loading/unloading delays and demurrage charges.
  • Limited Access for Landlocked AreasRequires additional transport modes to reach inland destinations, adding complexity and cost.
  • Documentation ComplexityInvolves extensive documentation, customs procedures, and compliance with international maritime regulations.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between FCL and LCL?

With FCL the whole container is reserved for you, which is secure and economical for larger shipments. With LCL the container space is shared with other consignments; it is cost-effective for small volumes, but the cargo is handled more.

What does sea freight transit time depend on?

Route, sailing schedule, number of transshipments, port congestion and weather all affect transit time. Because sea freight takes longer than air freight, we recommend planning your shipment early.

Which documents are required for sea freight?

You typically need a bill of lading (B/L), commercial invoice and packing list; depending on the cargo, a certificate of origin or special certificates may also be required. Our team manages the documentation together with you.

What are demurrage and detention?

Demurrage is the charge for a container staying at the port or terminal beyond the free time. Detention is the charge for keeping a container outside the terminal beyond the free time. Good planning keeps these costs down.
